I have driven the Elephant!
For those of you that have missed my ramblings on these pages I'm sorry to have been away for so long, for those that haven't noticed I was gone, nevermind! But let me tell you what happened to me at our car show recently. As many may know we were priveleged to have a special 9 car collection of Hemi Challengers and 'cudas from one of our members.
Rounding out the display was a Moulin Rouge (aka Panther Pink) '70 R/T Charger SE, 440, 4-spd car, a one of one edition. All in all a feast for the eyes of High Impact colors and Hemi cars. The tent where they were on display was the focal point of the entire show and always was busy with people admiring and, let's face it, lusting, over that collection of legendary Detroit Iron.
For me though, that was only the beginning of the fun: Thanks to Shirley Sanor, after the show was over, I got to drive one of those legends of Detroit, a ‘71 Plum Crazy Hemi ‘cuda 4-speed with white Billboard stripes and white vinyl top (y’know, your average, subtle, daily driver) about 30 miles from our show to it’s home in San Jose. I was a part of a 5 car (3 convertible, two coupes) caravan of High-Impact color Challengers and ‘cudas driving down the local freeways and expressways. It was awesome, listening to that hemi rumble and feeling the power lurking under my right foot!
We created quite a stir as you might imagine. People honking and giving thumbs up. I don't think the local roads have seen those kinds of cars in 35 years! I have to say I had an ear to ear grin on my face the whole way. Sitting behind that hemi 'cuda Shaker hood and rowing through the gears with that Pistol Grip was an incredible feeling! I only tried to start off in 3rd once, but I figured that one out right away and didn't stall, thankfully! Wade and Aster, I want to thank you for enabling me to have the experience of a lifetime.
For everyone else, see what can happen when you volunteer at our show! You may not get to drive a museum quality Hemi car but something equally magical might happen…...it did to me!
